Cost Of Rooftop Solar System (On-Grid, Off-Grid, Hybrid) In India

Writer's picture: Palash KhanPalash Khan

If you looking for the installation of solar panels on your roof and wondering how much it will cost and how much savings you can have on your monthly electricity bill, then you are in the right place. People ask this question quite often and most of the cases this is the first question people ask. Here, I have tried to address this important questions without going into any technical details.

The cost of rooftop solar system depends on the system size (1 kW, 25 kW, 100 kW etc), system type (on-grid, off-grid, hybrid etc), autonomy needed (1 Hr, 4 Hr, 24 Hr etc), location and also on the quality of the products and services.

A comprehensive summary of various types of solar systems along with the cost is given here for you convenience. The pice is inclusive of GST. Please do not hesitate to drop a comment in the comment section at the bottom if you have any specific queries/comments/suggestions.

On-Grid Rooftop Solar System

Where To Use: Power cut is less than 2 Hr a day on average, peak load is 5 kVA or more, want to reduce electricity bill. Suitable for residential, commercial and industrial purpose where the electricity consumption is above 500 Units (kWh) per month.

Off-Grid Rooftop Solar System

Where To Use: Where grid electricity is not available and the peak load is less or around 5 kVA. Generally remote area or places where grid connection is not feasible.

Hybrid Rooftop Solar System

Where To Use: Frequent power cut, peak load is less or around 5 kVA, daytime consumption is high etc. Suitable for normal household and places where electricity consumption is less or around 500 Units (kWh) per month.

For more detailed quotation for your rooftop solar system, fill up the GoSolar form and we will send you the quotation within 2 working days.

The cost of rooftop solar system is decreasing every year. This is due to reduction of solar cell price, economy of scale and new technologies. This table will be updated from time to time. Cost Breakup

The major component of a solar power plant is solar panels. For on-grid solar systems solar panels accounts 50-60 % of the total project cost. Incase of hybrid and off-grid solar system battery cost becomes significant. Depending on the autonomy of the solar system battery cost can vary 20-60% of the total project cost. It is recommended to use battery as minimum as possible, since solar battery generally comes with a warranty of 5 years. This is a recurring cost, which needs to be taken care of in every 5-8 years. Cost breakup of on-grid, off-grid and hybrid solar system is shown below for visualization.

Vendor To Vendor Cost Variations

The cost of your solar power plant can vary significantly from vendor to vendor. Do not always go for the lowest quote. There can be several reasons for the variation in price, generally you get what you pay for. Consider the following points before finalising the deal.

Solar Panel Brands: Products from Tier 1 manufacturers are generally more expensive, but offer much better performance and reliability. Prefer the good quality solar panels over the cheaper one. Learn more about the best solar panels in India.

Warranties: Reputed vendors will provide

-- 10 year product warranty on solar panels

-- 25 year performance warranty on solar panels

-- 5 year warranty on the solar inverter

-- 5 year warranty on the solar battery

-- 5 year comprehensive system warranty

Operation and Maintenance: Reputed vendors will provide at least 1 year of free operation and maintenance of the whole solar power plant, which can be extended.

Capacity Overstatement: Some vendors may provide 5 kW solar panels and around 10 kW solar inverter and advertise it as 10 kW solar system to reduce the price of the system. Please, be aware of that. This system will generate half the electricity of a 10 kW system. A 10 kW solar system should contain 10 kW solar panels and around 10 kW inverter.
